It was home away from home for Upen Patel in his recent visit to Johannesburg, South Africa. Accompanied by his mother and other relatives, Upen has fond memories of Johannesburg since the city made him feel almost at home, courtesy the warm reception he got there from people of Indian origin.

“It was a heartwarming moment for me as close to 5000 Indians assembled as I visited Rameshwar Mahadev Mandir (in Lenasia, a suburb of Johannesburg) for the Diwali celebrations. They were very nice to me and were happy to see me amidst all the celebrations. The angry young man celebrated Diwali with his mum in South Africa recently. He was reportedly busy enjoying and dancing with the girls there.

Upen had a funny experience quite recently when he spent a few days in Ooty while shooting for Raj Kumar Santoshi directed ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ (which features Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif as the main leads). He got quite a few consolation calls from his friends who were wondering how the young man was coping in the serene town of Ooty which was devoid of any nightlife. However, Upen was hardly amused. Reason? He was not missing the nightlife of the city of Mumbai which never sleeps and was instead at peace with himself in the hills of Ooty.

On queried if this was true, Upen was initially reluctant to talk about what had transpired in Ooty, “I don’t wish to make a lot of hullabaloo about where I spend my time and what keeps me busy on an average day or night. It is quite personal to me and what occupied me most was the fact that I was shooting with Raj Kumar Santoshi.” Continue reading →

Apparently he got a call from an old friend in London, who had a baby and his friend wished Upen was in London with him and his family to celebrate this joyous moment and without blinking an eyelid, Upen flew down to London to surprise his friends. He stayed there for few hours and caught a flight, the same evening, back to Mumbai to be in time for his shoot. Continue reading →
