36 China Town is a Bollywood film directed by Abbas-Mustan. The film is a murder mystery which stars Akshaye Khanna, Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and Upen Patel. The film was released in May 2006.

It was considered a failure by critics who criticised it for its weak storyline and lack of suspense for being a murder mystery but still managed to to be moderately successful at the box office, partially due to the comedy in the film.

After burning the modeling ramp, looks like Upen Patel is now all set to take over the film industry with his prowess. The model turned actor recently won the best debutant award at the prestigious Anand Bazar Patrika awards held at Kolkatta on Wednesday.

While Bipasha Basu won the best actress award. The younger actor who is just one film old actually seems to be getting himself in the habit of winning awards.

The latest buzz making rounds is that Upen Patel has been nominated for the best newcomer category at GiFA awards this year. He probably is also on the list of Star Gold’s ‘Sabse Favourite Kaun’, which is an audience choice award. Continue reading ‘Upen Patel wins Best Debutant Award’

Upen Patel won his first ever acting award when he was crowned the Best Male Debutant for 36 China Town.

“i don’t know what to say,” he admitted even as the crowd clapped loud and long. Kangana Ranaut, who won the Best Female Debutant award for Gangster, couldn’t make it to Calcutta

Rumours are rife that directors Vipul Shah and Suneel Darshan are at loggerheads over their protege Upen Patel.

Darshan is said to have advised the young actor against doing Shah’s “Namaste London”. Upen plays a lead role in Darshan’s “Shakalaka Boom Boom”.

Darshan, however, denies the charge.

“I’ve better things to do than to involve myself with what films Upen is doing. Upen does come to me for advice. When he does, I tell what’s right,” Darshan told IANS.

If reports are to be believed Vipul Shah and Suneel Darshan are at loggerheads over their protege Upen Patel.

Apparently Suneel in whose Shakala Laka Boom Boom Upen plays a lead, advised the young wannabe from doing Vipul’s Namaste London.

Suneel denies the charge outright. “I’ve better things to do than to involve myself with what films Upen is doing. Upen does come to me for advice. When he does I tell what’s right.”

Says Vipul Shah, “I can’t imagine why Suneel Darshan would warn Upen against doing my film. If Suneel wishes Upen well, as I’m sure he does, he’d see Namaste London as a big step ahead for Upen.” Continue reading ‘Now two men fight over Upen Patel!’

While Kangana and Upen Patel have been shooting for Suneel Darshan’s Shaka Laka Boom Boom in South Africa reports about their mutual admiration have been filtering back into Mumbai, suggesting a rather rapidly developing warmth between the two.

Upen doesn’t deny a special affinity to Kangana. “But that’s it! There’s nothing beyond a friendship with Kangana,” Upen doesn’t know whether to be alarmed or amused by the rumours back home. “I mean Kangana and I get along like a house on fire. She with her Himachal accent, me with my British-Gujju accent, we’re quite a pair. But there’s nothing more to our friendship. I wish people wouldn’t be so provincial in their perceptions on friendships. Can’t two young people have fun without being involved with one another? Kangana and I enjoy one another’s company so far away from home. We rib each other constantly. And I suspect my behaviour is being reported back home as flirting. But that’s the way I am.” To compound Upen’s woes, he has a girlfriend to be answerable to back home. “I’m in a relationship, and this kind of talk can only make matters murky.”

But Kangana has another story to tell. “Upen and me? Please! He’s just not my type at all. We converse at two different tangents….Rather, He does all the talking. When Upen talks there’s little for anyone else to say . I’m shocked at reports back home that I’m ‘impressed’ by Upen. Please! Is he Mr Dilip Kumar or Mr Amitabh Bachchan that I’d be impressed? I’ve better things to do than to get impressed with someone who’s just a co-star. I wonder who’s spreading these rumours. It’s not me because I’ve nothing to gain from being linked with Upen.”

Kangana is certainly implying there’s more to the whole Kangana-Upen stories than meets the eye.

She sighs. “Look, I don’t act extra-friendly with a co-star when cameras are around. I’m a very frank girl. If I get into a relationship, or even begin to get interested in a boy I’d scream from rooftops. I don’t hide my feelings, because I can’t. Upen is just not my type. It was pretty fucking difficult gathering these relatively high-quality pictures of London-born Indian actor, Upen Patel.

Why? Well, Bollywood websites aren’t the best and he hasn’t been in that much shit. Patel’s most recent acting project was a flick called 36 China Town. We’ve never heard of it, but we’re sure he’s brilliant.

Hopefully one of you out there’s got some pull in Hollywood so we can see a little more Patel…
